Sanchi Stupa – Peek into 3rd Century BCE

My friend stays in Bhopal. For a long time he had been inviting me to his place. Some time in Sept 2013 we firmed up the plan to visit.

Location :

Bhopal is a nice city. It is capital of state of Madhyapradesh in India. it is about 800 km from Delhi and is well connected by air and Bus.

Sanchi is a Buddhist Complex well known for its Stupa on a hill top. It is 48 km from Bhopal on north east side. About an hour and a half journey from Bhopal by road. It is well connected by road.

Timing :

It is open from sunrise to sunset, all days. There is a museum which opens all days except Friday from 1000 hrs to 1700 hrs.

Best Time to Visit :

Through out the year. The Sanchi is a tropical place. Hot dry summer from March to June. It moderately rains from July to September. Pleasant cool winter from October to February. Winter is pretty pleasant.

Entry Fees :

Rs. 10 per person (From India and SAARC Countries) Rs.250 per person for Non Indian.

A little history :

Emperor Ashoka initiated the construction and completed Stupa 1 in 2nd century BCE. It was built to keep relics of Buddha and to spread Buddhism . The subsequent kings of various dynasty kept on adding, building up to 12th century AD. Currently being managed by ASI by Government of India.
